I’ve got a habit of making decisions that catch people off guard.

Not because I’m careless, and not because I haven’t thought it through. Usually it’s the opposite. I’ve been chewing on something for weeks, turning it over in my head, reading late at night, praying quietly about it… and then all of a sudden, I move. To me, it feels like the next logical step. To everyone else, it sounds like it came out of nowhere.

I’ve learned that just because I’ve been living with an idea in my head doesn’t mean everyone else has. What seems obvious to me might feel abrupt to someone else, simply because I didn’t bring them along while I was sorting it out. That’s something I’m working on.

Truth is, I wish I was more strategic. The kind of person who can lay out a long plan, stick to it, and follow it clean from start to finish. That sounds nice. Predictable. Efficient. But that’s just not how I seem to operate. I think, I pray, I prepare, and once I’ve figured out just enough to be dangerous, I go.

I don’t wait for perfect. I act. I adjust. I learn as I go. And while it’s not always polished, it usually moves things forward.

There’s a fine line between being impulsive and being decisive. I try to stay on the right side of that line. Most of the time I do. When I don’t, I admit it, make it right, and carry on.

Some folks need every detail lined up before they take the first step. I’ve found that if I’ve got a clear enough picture and peace in my gut, it’s better to get moving and adjust along the way. Progress usually comes from doing, not waiting. And the Lord’s been faithful to guide my steps once I’ve taken one.
