I drove off this morning without that one thing I meant to bring.

Not the first time. Probably not the last. I had it in hand earlier, even set it right by the door. But by the time I got where I was going, it was still sitting back home by the door, probably wondering what it had done wrong.

I usually get worked up about that sort of thing. A little forgetfulness turns into a whole inner lecture. You should’ve remembered. You should be better than this. You should slow down. And before long, I’m not just frustrated, I’m feeling like I’ve failed at something so darn simple.

Lately, I’ve been trying a different approach. When I forget, I take it as a sign to pause. Not to beat myself up, but to ask what’s actually filling my mind. Because it’s not empty in there, it’s full. Plum full of things I care about. People, responsibilities, memories, thoughts I haven’t had time to finish.

Maybe forgetting a small thing now and then is the cost of carrying so much that matters.

That doesn’t mean I won’t keep trying. I’ll keep using checklists. I’ll keep placing things where I think I’ll see them. And I’ll keep giving myself a little grace when it all slips anyway.

Because at the end of the day, what matters most usually finds its way back to us.
